ALLOF AFLUTTER
If you thought the most you could expect from lash enhancements were fiddly old fashioned strip lashes, then think again. Today’s lash enhancements, whether they be individual, flares or strips, are created from natural-looking materials and adhered using the latest adhesives with long-lasting results, or curled and conditioned to look like natural lashes.
These treatments offer you the opportunity to increase your salon footfall as well as spend when offered alongside other treatments, as Andréa Ní Éalaithe of Star Products International explains: “Eyelash application is often offered as a treatment on its own but is proving very popular as an add on after make-up application.”
When applied and removed properly, today’s lash enhancements create no damage to the natural lashes, and simply fall out when the lashes are shed in their natural cycle every 8-12 weeks. A new set of lashes can then be applied, meaning repeat business for the salon and guaranteed satisfaction for your clients. You can price your treatments depending on how often a client comes for an appointment – the longer between appointments the more expensive the treatment, as more lashes will need replacing, similar to how you would market infill treatments for nail enhancements.
The trend for lash enhancements follows the increasingly dramatic eye looks worn
by celebrities, actors and singers on a daily basis; no longer are luscious lashes just kept for special occasions. As with most trends, in recent years this has filtered through to the high street, and today women, from teenagers through to mature clients, are demanding these looks for themselves.
“Now with the Irish lady accustomed to that extra flutter, it’s hard for salons to know which type of lashes to choose, and more importantly which type will be right for your clientele,” says Anne Woods, director of Baam Cosmetics.
Thus, the team at Baam Cosmetics have undertaken research in the area of lash extensions, and discovered that the best results come from using top quality lashes and offering a range that has flexible ‘staying’ periods. “The secret is having options for your clients. Some ladies like their lashes to last for weeks, others just want something to give that extra ‘wow factor’ at a special occasion,” says Anne.
When it comes to the wow factor, take inspiration from Elaine McParland and her Up To My Eyes Beauty Salon in Greystones, Co.Wicklow, where she offers coloured eyelash extensions, inspired by the runway shows of Stella McCartney and Dior. The extensions can not only be tinted to a client’s colour of choice but also tailored to their preferred length, curl and fullness.
Lash health
As well as enabling you to offer an in- demand treatment, lash enhancement today is also about maintaining and improving the health of lashes. A number of products are now available which are applied to the lash line and lashes themselves, to help condition and encourage new growth. These products prove to be ideal retail items for clients
who simply want to improve the quality and appearance of their natural lashes without wearing enhancements.
In addition, many lash enhancement ranges feature complementary products such as eye make-up remover. You should always encourage clients to purchase these items from you as they will help increase the longevity of their lashes, as Audrey Heffernan of Hennessy Hair & Beauty explains: “Eye make-up removers which contain oil will break down and weaken the glue, causing the lashes to lift.”
Training opportunities
Applying lashes is a fine art, but one that can be learnt by any beauty therapist with a little patience who successfully completes an accredited training course. Most product suppliers will offer training, sometimes as part of their opening order package, whilst a number of other options are also available. For example, Perfect Lady’s Individual Eyelash Course includes a free starter kit, with 50 boxes of eyelashes, eyelash adhesive, tweezers etc (Perfect Lady: 01 894 47 69).
Alternatively, Star Products International offer the Lush Lashes Course which demonstrates quick and easy application techniques for strip and individual lashes, and covers various looks from natural daytime to evening and funky fashion trends (Star Products International: 01 460 5055).
If you’re looking for personalised training, Ms. DIVA LASH Academy, in association with LASH by Francesca, offers one-to-one training and mentoring sessions with Aoife Durity, Master Lash Stylist who runs a Lash Studio in Ballincollig,
Co.Cork.

All of the courses at the academy are run with one student per course, which means 100% one-to-one attention. During the training, you will create a professional looking portfolio to showcase your work, and be assessed whilst working on a client. “The emphasis on our training is not just learning to place a lash upon a lash but about learning how to create impressive styles,” explains Aoife.
