Once you have this information, you can plan your budget and see if starting your own business is realistic.
When it comes to finance you are not expected to be an expert, that is why we have accountants (whose costs you will need to factor into your budget). “I would suggest appointing a local accountant which will make it easier for you should you need to meet with them or on the occasions when you need to drop your accounts off for compiling,” says Marie-Louise.
“With regards to your accounts the majority of this you can do yourself and I would recommend keeping up-to-date with this as you go along, maybe on a weekly or monthly basis. Purchase a very simple cash book and record all monies in and all monies out. Keep all of your receipts and number them so as they can be cross referenced and allocated easily. This will make the job easier for
your accountant which in turn will keep the cost of their services down, saving you money.
“You will also need to set up a bank account purely for the business. Most banks offer free business banking for the first 12- 18 months so shop around and get the longest free term possible. I would again suggest you bank with a local branch making it easier for you for banking and again should you ever need to visit for any reason.”
“For the purpose of a mobile business I would suggest registering as a Sole Trader would be sufficient as you will be working alone,” explains Marie-Louise.
If you do this, you must register with the Irish Tax and Customs Revenue – you will pay tax on the profits from your business and on any other income that you have. As a self- employed person you will pay income tax under the self- assessment system, once a year. The Revenue will assess your liability for income tax, Pay Related Social
Insurance (PRSI) and the Universal Social Charge based on the information supplied by you, and any amounts that you owe are paid directly to Revenue.
With regards to VAT, a trader is generally required to register for VAT for supplying services over €37,500 a year, or supplying goods over €75,000 per year.
Your area of work
Think about the geographical area that you’re prepared to work within as a mobile therapist. To help with this, get a map and put a pin where you live, then look at the areas surrounding your home town/village and draw a circle as far as you would be prepared to travel. Remember this is your business so it’s up to you how far you want your business to reach. If you live in a built-up area you might decide that you only want to travel 10 miles in each direction, but if you live in a rural area you may need to extend your area 20-30 miles in each direction to ensure you’re covering neighbouring towns and villages.
Appoint a local accountant, which will make it easier for you to meet with them. 85
