Multi-faceted benefits – and a wealth of products featuring advanced technology – mean

there is plenty of room for base layer growth in 2013. R

esearch from SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. shows the value of the base layer is still not fully understood. According to SMS INC. stats more than 80%

of European golfers who wear a base layer for golf do so to keep warm – with only 12% quoting muscle performance or reduced muscle fatigue as their reason. Base layers, of course, do help with warmth – though more in terms of maintaining a core temperature through better circulation rather than as an insulating garment in itself. Indeed, for this very reason, letting warmth and moisture out to avoid overheating is just as important in base layer performance as keeping it in. Moreover, with only around one in ten golfers who wear a base layer buying into the performance-enhancing properties of the base layer – including reduced fatigue, primed muscles and injury avoidance – there appears to some educational work to be done in helping potential customers understand the base layer’s multi-faceted benefits. On top of this, SMS INC. reports that, on average, just 31.5% of golfers in the primary

European markets wear a base layer for golf – which means there is plenty of scope for this market to expand.
