WHAT’S NEW
STOP PRESS! T
he Caribbean may be laid back, but it could never be accused of standing still. The islands and countries of this region are continually adding new hotels and attractions, while existing properties are adding extra facilities.
Improved transport links with increased ferry services and additional flights are making it easier to travel between the islands too. Here’s a round-up of what’s happening:
NEW HOTELS & RESORTS Puerto Rico is planning a huge hotel expansion with a $1 billion development plan that will provide 15,000 new beds on the island during 2012 with the opening of 20 properties and the upgrading of others. These include the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino and the Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort. New hotels include the Ritz-Carlton Reserve Dorado Beach Resort & Spa, due to open in late 2012. At the other end of the scale is Secret Bay, a new boutique property on the isle of Dominica. Located on the north-west coast a short drive from Portsmouth, it comprises four secluded villas and bungalows offering fabulous views of the sea and surrounding mountains. Luxury touches include private pools or hot tubs, outdoor showers and hammocks. Saint Lucia has a string of hotel developments.
These include the opening of blu St Lucia, a new member of the Harlequin Hotels group; new ‘Hilltop Dream Suites’ at Ladera Resort; and a $20 million refurbishment of The BodyHoliday resort.
