Fakuma 2012 | show preview

Fakuma 2012 will continue the show’s long tradition of focusing on processing technology and manufacturing innovation. Injection World takes a look at some of what will be on display

Get in touch with technology The 22nd Fakuma trade fair takes place in Friedrichshafen

in Germany from 16-20 of October. Europe’s most important injection moulding show this year will provide an expected 1,500 or so exhibitors with an opportunity to showcase their latest machinery, equipment and processing innovations. According to show organiser PE Schall, close to 45,000 visitors attended last year’s event. And although Fakuma is a predominantly German event, more than 30% of those visiting the 2011 show came from outside of Germany. Fakuma has, in recent years, managed to deliver a

growing attendance even while the European economy has struggled. To a large extent, this has been due to the strength of Germany’s manufacturing sector together with the show’s location on the shore of Lake Constance – which puts it at the centre of a high technology manufacturing region that extends beyond its home market into Switzerland and Austria. And, of course, Fakuma is a technology show. Four

years on from the global fi nancial crisis, the world economy is still fragile and the debt problems across the Euro-zone seem no nearer a solution. Europe’s injection moulders are as much in need now – perhaps even more in need –of high technology, cost effi cient manufacturing technologies. And that is what they will see throughout Fakuma’s 12 exhibition halls. Over the next six pages we take a look at some of the key processing innovations that will be displayed

across the Fakuma 2012 fairground. German machinery maker Arburg (Hall A3, Stand 3101)will be showing two newly-developed composite injection moulding processes on its stand – Particle- foam Composite injection Moulding (PCIM) and the SKZ long fi bre direct injection moulding technique. PCIM is a joint development Arburg has been

working on with injection moulding group Krallmann and particle foam specialist Ruch Novaplast, both from Germany. It combines production of a foam component with injection moulding of a rigid element in a single production step, eliminating the need for secondary assembly and bonding processes. Particle foam mouldings are used to create a wide

variety of lightweight, insulating and impact absorbing structures. Arburg says the ability to combine particle foam moulding with injection moulding will open up new opportunities in areas such as electric mobility and lightweight construction.
