designs in this year’s Worldstar packaging awards. Injection World looks at the best examples

Worldstar rewards “best of the best”

The winners of the Worldstar awards were announced in July in Split in Croatia by the World Packaging organisation. The competition – which is only open to designs that have already won an award in one of more than 50 national

qualifying design contests – claims to include “the best of the best “ examples of packaging innovation. Injection moulded plastics again featured prominently among the 2012 winners – this article looks at some of the best

examples.

Starting at the top, Scholle Packaging’s Australian Zork wine closure business unit was awarded a place in the beverage category as well as securing a bronze place in the President’s Award – the highest accolade in the contest – for its SPK resealable closure for sparkling wines. The injection moulded four-part closure is said to be easy to apply, simple to re-close, and provides the same shelf-life as traditional cork closures. Indonesia’s PT Aqua Golden Mississippi also won an award in the beverage category for its Two Colour injection moulded water bottle closure. Produced in a blue and white colour combination of HDPE and LDPE, the closure

provides an enhanced cosmetic fi nish while its more complex manufacturing gives additional protection from counterfeiters. Aside from its aesthetics, the LDPE element also improves the sealing performance of the closure. In the food category, Denmark’s RPC Superfos was

recognised for its Superlock high barrier plastics containers, which provide users with a viable alternative to glass for long term protection of oxygen sensitive foodstuffs. Available with a wide neck screw-type closure, the injection moulded PP packs use full surface IML technology to combine an oxygen barrier with outstanding decorative opportunities. Indian company Manjushree Technopak also

secured a food category award for the pack it developed with Cadbury Kraft for its Bubbaloo gum confectionery. The company designed an attractive waisted wide neck jar which is sealed with a custom injection moulded Grip Cap twist closure, which integrates fi nger grip points to make it easy for children to open it. US-based Fusion Packaging was awarded in the health and beauty category for its Square Twist Up (STU) airless dispenser. The injection moulded dispens- er cap incorporates a twist-up mechanism and pop-up actuator that prevents leakage and eliminates the need for the usual overcap, simultaneously exposing a larger surface area on the package for decoration or branding. Hungarian company Karsai Alba won a place in the

pharmaceutical and medical category for its latest injection moulded tablet dispenser, which incorporates a novel clip in the neck of the tub to provide simple tamper-evidence without requiring the use of additional security features on the closure. This year’s Worldstar awards contest attracted 243

entries from 33 countries, with the panel of 23 judges listing 137 individual award winners. The winners represent “the cream of global packaging design and technology”, according to Thomas Schneider, incoming president of the World Packaging Organisation for 2012-2014.
