in each wheel – are produced using DuPont’s Zytel HTN PPA, which is claimed to be stronger, lighter and less costly than the PPS grade originally considered for the component. The Zytel HTN bobbins are also said to more suitable for speed winding of the bobbins. New developments for the electronics sector from Sabic Innovative Plastics include Lexan CFR (Clear Flame Retardant) and three new additions to its Lexan products pitched for the emerging LED lighting sector. The Lexan CFR grades are said to be formulated to meet the needs of the notebook and tablet PC market, where housing wall sections are typically in the 0.8-1.2mm thicknesss range. The resins offer UL 94 V-0 ratings down to 1.0mm and UL 94 5VA at 3.0mm. The resins are said to be easy to process – the 18 MFI grade provides spiral fl ow characteristics similar to a 28 MFI fi re retardant PC – and are fully compliant with RoHS and TCO99 requirements. Sabic expects the CFR products to fi nd applications
in transparent electronic device housings and display panels, buttons and decorative panels on electrical appliances such as refrigerators. It says the combina- tion of UL 5VA and UL F1 ratings offered by some of the grades also makes them suitable for external applica- tions such as electric vehicle charging stations. The three new additions to the Lexan Lux product
line have been developed to withstand the elevated operating temperatures of the latest LED luminaire market, providing better colour stability and light transmission after extended periods of operation. The resins are said to retain more than 98% of their initial light transmission after 5,000h at 130˚C and a 10 unit improvement in transmission after heat ageing at the low wavelengths typical of LEDs. Suitable for automotive and general LED lighting
lenses, the Lux 2110T, 2010T and 2910T grades also offer a UL 94 V-2 rating at 0.8mm and carry IEC 60695-2-12 glow wire fl ammability index rating of 850˚C at 1.0mm. Sabic IP has also identifi ed a number of opportunities
for its polymers in injection moulded applications in the photovoltaics (PV) sector. At the Intersolar Europe trade fair in Munich, Germany, this summer it showed a tracking system for micro PV panels comprising brackets moulded in its LNP Thermocomp PF00DS glass reinforced resin and sliding surfaces in LNP Lubricomp DL002. It said this material combination results in a stiff assembly that provides extended maintenance-free operation with no external lubrication. The company also sees applications for its Noryl N190X resin in production of PV junction boxes, invertor housings and battery boxes. The company says the material provides long term durability and opens up opportuni- ties to miniaturise components.
