face (i.e. loss of volume, sagging contours, wrinkles). This approach aims to restore the face’s natural features, in a subtle way. Associated with this newer method of treatment, an injection technique based on the work of the foremost anti-ageing experts has been developed: The Soft Filling Technique®.

C

How to perform it? It is based on the use of a flexible

blunt-tip needle and on a limited number of insertion points. This procedure can be performed in a medical office, with or without local anaesthesia, without pain or

side-effects (oedema, inflammatory reactions, damage to blood vessels) (Figure 1).

The Soft Filling Technique® is

able to return volume to the face and lips, and to correct wrinkles with natural effects. It allows the face to be treated as a whole, and naturally tightens the contours using only a few points of insertion (2–4) on each side (Figure 2) to cover the entire face, and even one single point to treat mid- and lower-face.

Which tools to use? The Soft Filling Technique® relies on

recent technological changes that have developed flexible, strong needles, called micro-cannulae. Composed of a coloured hub (according to international standards) and a stainless steel tube, they distinguish themselves with a blunt-tip and a side port. The micro-cannula is chosen based on three parameters: ■ The outside caliber (OD), indicated in gauge (G), which,

with the length, determines how flexible the cannula is

■ The length, which is important depending on the size of the area to be treated

■ The internal caliber (Figure 3), which, with the length, determines rheology of HA to be injected according to its viscosity (for a given gauge, the longer the cannula, the greater the product’s flow resistance).

Based on high technology

manufacturing, innovative micro-cannulae have recently been conceived and launched with a combination of details which greatly facilitate precise procedures. Matching the needs of demanding users, the main innovations are a centimetric graduation along the stainless tube, an extra-large internal caliber, and a mark on the hub to indicate the location of the side orifice.

Areas to be treated As a result of this technique, all

zones of the face can be treated, including risky areas such as the forehead, temples, dark circles and side of cheekbones. The broadness of the micro-cannula allows a significant overall lifting effect for almost all patients. HA is injected in

a retrograde motion with the support of the left hand to guide the micro-cannula. Three types of procedures are

possible: ■ Volumising (deep injection) ■ Linear filling (wrinkles) ■ Skin stretching (fan-shape injection or 'nappage').
