Magnesium for heart health


Eating green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and nuts can keep your waistline slim, but new research published in the journal Atherosclerosis suggests the abundance of magnesium in these foods may protect your ticker, too. Japanese scientists examined the dietary magnesium intakes of 58,615 people. Those who consumed the highest levels significant- ly reduced their risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. Load up on pumpkin seeds, spinach, halibut, black beans, and quinoa to pump up your magnesium levels. –J.B.

Break out the olives, pita, and hummus, because new research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition revealed that people who follow a Mediterra- nean eating style—char- acterized by an abun- dance of fish, olive oil, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains—had a higher quality of life. Scientists analyzed the eating patterns of 11,015 study participants over a four-year period, and found there was a significant correlation between those who followed a Med diet and those who had better vitality, general health, and well-being.
