Spear

yourself a C11 Makaira Pro

The dramatic marlins of the deep oceans have lent their name to an advanced range of diving watches from Christopher Ward.

The C11 Makaira Pro will be the first of the range. Due to be released in October, it is now available on pre-order. Prices start from £499. See pages 20-21 for the full story.

Arriving in the early part of 2013 will be the Elite version of the C11 Makaira Pro. This will be CW’s first watch with a titanium case. As well as being a certified chronometer, the Elite will incorporate a helium release valve developed by the famous Swiss specialist manufacturer Fimm. It will have an internal bezel designed specifically with divers in mind. It’s another Christopher Ward advance.

IN SEARCH OF AMELIA EARHART

On 31 May 1932 the pioneering American aviator Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, completing the Newfoundland-to-Ireland flight in a record 14 hours 56 minutes.

This inspiring adventurer continues to fascinate people 75 years after she disappeared over the central Pacific while attempting to fly around the world. On 2 July 1937, more than two-thirds of the way into their circumnavigation, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan took off from Papua New Guinea in their twin-engined Lockheed Electra 10E aircraft, en route to Howland Island, an uninhabited coral atoll almost halfway between Hawaii and Australia. One theory is that an error in navigation caused them to run out of fuel over the sea. They were never seen again. As Joni Mitchell wrote in her 1976 song Amelia, “She was

swallowed by the sky or by the sea”. The new Christopher Ward W11 Amelia watch has been inspired by this intriguing woman. Based on the C11 MSL, it has a smaller, 38mm, downsized version of the stunning and much-praised case. The new W11 Amelia is available at £299.
