Bluebird flies again

A TIMELY BLOG

Behind-the-scenes news from Christopher Ward Watches and insights into the wider watch industry are just two of the appealing aspects of the new Christopher Ward blog.

Accessible via the website, the CWORLD blog was launched in August and will include regular features from some of the UK’s leading watch journalists as well as articles and stories from inside the Christopher Ward business. “We want CWORLD to be a place that will be

interesting to visit for everyone fascinated by fine watches and the industry that creates them,” says Mike France, co-founder of Christopher Ward Watches. “There will be plenty about our own business, but we also want independent views expressed by influential contributors across a range of subjects. There’s already more than enough self-congratulatory hype in the watch world, so we’re quite happy for our blog to tackle some of the grittier issues of the day in an open and honest fashion.”

One hundred years after the legendary driver Malcolm Campbell started breaking speed records, Christopher Ward is thrilled to have been named the official timing partner to the modern Bluebird speed record team. This will be a fascinating and long-term alliance between two innovative companies that champion British design and technology.

Malcolm Campbell started a racing dynasty. In 1964 his son, Donald Campbell, became the only person ever to hold both the land and water speed records in the same year and today’s team wants to emulate that achievement 50 years on. Aiming to set new world records in 2014 are Don Wales, Malcolm’s grandson, and his cousin Gina Campbell, Donald’s daughter. Both are previous record breakers, but these days their Bluebirds vehicles are powered by eco-friendly electric motors. The warm-up for the world record bids in 2014 will be attempts this autumn to improve the British speed records for electric-powered craft. While the third generation of the legendary Campbell family is refining its high-speed technology, Christopher Ward is working on the designs for a series of Christopher Ward Bluebird watches, the first of which will be released in 2013. It is likely to feature the much-praised Jumping Hour movement that first appeared in the C9 Harrison Collection in 2011. Gina and Don intend to wear the watches on their runs. On June 12 Christopher Ward’s founders attended a gathering of historic Bluebirds outside the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London. In 1912 Malcolm Campbell saw a play called The Blue Bird at the theatre and was so inspired by it that he immediately renamed his racing car Bluebird and re- painted it accordingly as soon as he got home from London.
