f one range can be said to have made the reputation of Christopher Ward, it’s the Malvern Collection. The elegant and masculine C3 Malvern Chronograph was inspired by the dashboard dials of a classic Aston Martin. The C5 Malvern Automatic is as memorably beautiful as the hills that gave it its name. Together the pair reflect the quiet understatement of English design. Their introduction in 2005 personified the new company’s aim of putting high-quality watches within the financial reach of most people. Seven years on, it’s time to update these favourites and rather than a cosmetic change here and there, the CW designers have created

Christopher Ward’s technicians have selected four movements for the updates. The C3 Malvern Chronograph Mk II is powered by a Ronda 5040.D movement, while a Ronda 1015.1 is used in the C5 Malvern Quartz Mk II. A Selitta SW200-1 powers the Malvern Automatic and the flagship C50 version has at its heart the COSC certified version of the same movement.
The case size has been standardised across the collection. The C3 case was 40mm and the C5 case was 38mm, but for this second- generation all the models will use a 39mm case. The see-through exhibition backs have been retained for the mechanical watches so that the

a striking new range of Mark II Malverns that is likely to make an equally memorable impression. The desire has been to make the watches more contemporary while still retaining the Malvern DNA. The new versions are cleaner, more legible and even more eye- catching. There is also, unashamedly, a more luxurious feel and style on all the options. Chris Ward explains: “The C3 and C5 Malverns are very close to the hearts of everyone at CW and many of our customers also share a similar emotional attachment. They were our first designs. They started this whole enterprise off and we owe them a great deal. Changing them needed to be done carefully. We tested the look of the new Malverns when we introduced the 39mm C50 COSC in the autumn of 2011. It was the overwhelmingly positive reaction to that design that encouraged us to develop the C3s and C5s along the same lines. We hope to have the same response to the new Malverns.”
exceptional movements can be enjoyed and admired in their detailed splendour. It is impossible to overlook the superb
galvanic dials on the new Malvern Collection. In place of the former two-piece matt-finished option, the new Malverns have a one-piece metal galvanic finished dial, a refined design feature that has proved to be very popular on the C50 COSC. Even within the relatively modest 39mm case, the entire effect is to make the watch appear bigger, clearer and even more legible. The galvanic dials are produced using the same process as that used for gold plating. It can only be used for certain colours and produces a particularly subtle pearlescent, sun-ray finish. Compared to a regular varnished dial, the galvanic finish is more resistant to the ageing process of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. For the new Malvern Collection charcoal replaces black, the silver finish (which works particularly well ➸
