Serco announces Richard Williams’appointment


International services company Serco Group has appointed Richard Williams, 49, as managing director, transport, for its newly formed UK & European Division. Williams has worked for Serco since 1989 holding


senior roles on Serco’s numerous contracts, including the Docklands Light Railway, Northern Isles Ferries, Adelaide Bus Company and Sydney Ferries, as well as senior positions in Serco’s prisons, leisure and marine services.

Key members of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee (TfGM), advising Greater Manchester Combined Authority on transport policy, were appointed at the authority’s recent AGM. The chair was named as Councillor Andrew Fender (Manchester), with Councillor Roger Jones (Salford) taking the role of vice chair.


Human resources director appointed Support services company, May Gurney, has appointed David Billingham, 51, as group human resources director, with responsibility for overseeing the development of the group’s people management, training and rewards programmes for May Gurney’s 6,100 UK staff.

Footplate Superintendent


The successful applicant will be responsible for the management, provision and competency standards of NYMR footplate crews, in accordance with NYMR’s Safety Management System. These include staff training, competency assessment arrangements, incident investigation and performance matters.


You will be expected to give leadership and guidance to a volunteer workforce, including welding together the footplate inspectorate and training team. Good communication skills are essential together with the ability to work well with a variety of different personalities, and cope with a demanding workload. A good knowledge of both steam and diesel traction is essential, preferably including hands on footplate experience.


The post requires regular weekend and bank holiday working and carries an “on call” commitment. This is a permanent appointment based on approx. 3.5 days a week averaged over the year (recognising a higher demand during the main operating season).


Salary is subject to negotiation based on experience.
