Folic acid improves kids’ language skills If you’re planning to conceive, you likely already know it’s a good idea to increase folic acid intake to prevent neural tube defects. Now, new research suggests that taking folic acid while pregnant may also reduce the risk of language delay in kids. The study analyzed the skills of 38,954 children and found that language delays occurred in just 0.4 percent of kids whose mothers supplemented with folic acid. This measurement jumped to 0.9 percent (a statistically significant difference) when women didn’t take prenatal folic acid. Aim for 400–800 mcg folic acid per day before and during pregnancy.

Compostable Now more than ever it’s time to
embrace composting. But don’t confuse compostable products with biodegradable products. Biodegradable is a general term that describes the process of a material decomposing over time— but it doesn’t mean much on a package because it’s unregulated. Compostable is specifi c:
Look for products showing the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) Compostable logo. BPI, a nonprofi t association, tests and certifi es packaged goods to guarantee they break down in a composting facility within 90–180 days; rigorous testing ensures plants can thrive in the resulting humus. This insignia also verifi es that when the package is processed, no plastic, heavy metal, or chemical residues are left behind.
