Comments October: To the Point
DEBORAHSEXTON’STOTHE Point editorial in theOctober issue of Convene (“Doing the Right Things”) is spot on. Business ethics and integri- ty in the exhibition/conference indus- try all too often has been lacking. It has been an area of concern(of mine) formany years. I believe the situation has improved, but still hasmuch roomfor improvement. I hope your members and readers agree with you. PeterW.Nathan President PWN Exhibicon International, LLC
September: International Meetings
JUSTHADACHANCETOREAD the article on hosted-buyer programs in the September issue ofConvene (“Be TheirGuest”). It’s excellent. Great interviews with Philip Arbuckle andKaren Sole that give testament to the value of participating in interna- tional trade shows.Thank you for highlighting the opportunity. The entire issue feels very global.
I also enjoyed the“Off theGrid” article about planningmeetings in dangerous locations and the inter- view withMaartenVanneste. PCMAis gaining international momentum, and it’s exciting. Claire Smith,CMP Vice President of Sales and Marketing Vancouver Convention Centre
PCMA@LinkedIn: ASL Interpreters
SALLYANNDEBOLT,CMP, meetingmanager for theNational Middle School Association, recently posted this question toPCMA’s LinkedIn group:“I have two atten- dees requestingASL[AmericanSign Language] interpreters for the entire three days of our event. Is this some- thing you have encountered, and did you pay for the services?”

Here are someof theresponses shereceived:
UNDERTHEADA[AMERICANS With Disabilities Act], you likely need to do this unless doing so puts an “undue burden”on the association —and that’s construed very narrow- ly. If you don’t have the budget for it, look for a school for the deaf nearby —e.g., in[Washington,] D.C.,Gal- laudet [University] does a lot of vol- unteerwork or for asmall donation to the school. Tyra Hilliard, Ph.D., J.D.,CMP Associate Professor of Restau- rant, Hospitality, and Meetings Management University of Alabama
WETYPICALLYFINDTHATTHE organization sending the attendee manages theASL sourcing for their ownemployee, andwethencoordi- nate access for the interpreter. Iwould also note that whilemanaging to ADArequirements willmeet your legal obligations, the language and policies are outdated and do not ade- quately address inclusion for atten- dees withdisabilities in today’s event environment. IHAVEHADTOPROVIDE ASL interpreters for an annual meeting. It is very costly, as interpreters can only work a certain amount of time, so each person needs at least two interpreters. The association pro- vides these services if notified at least a month in advance. We also require that the requester provide a schedule, so that general sessions and other sessions in common could be serviced by one interpreter. You may find that the ASL com-
pany may also require a supervisor depending upon the number of interpreters involved. Andrea Simon Freelance Meetings Consultant Washington, D.C.
