Fish Passes on the River Alyn helping to achieve

European Standards One reason that the River Alyn was failing to meet new European standards was that fish were unable to travel upstream to reach important spawning grounds. Water control structures such as weirs prevent the upstream movement of fish.

Last year a new fish pass was completed at Caergwrle Weir and now work has started at the Rossett weir. Although a fish pass was constructed previously, this was addition to the weir back in the 1930's and does not actually help fish to pass over the weir.

The Environment Agency Wales have started work on a new fish pass which, when complete, will open up over 38 km of river to migrating fish such as salmon, sea trout and eels.

It is being funded by the European Fisheries Fund and the Welsh Government as part of the ‘Salmon for Tomorrow’ project and will be completed by September 2012.

Alan Winstone, from Environment Agency Wales said: “Construction of this fish pass at Rossett is the latest in a programme to remove man-made barriers to migrating fish in our rivers.

“By opening up new spawning grounds, this fish pass will boost fish populations in the river and help the Alyn to meet tough EU directive standards. “A healthy river with a thriving fish population will also be good news for other wildlife in the area that rely on them for their survival.”

Fish Friendly Refu

Goswick, Beal and Ross are three water flow control structures near Berwick upon Tweed.

Operated by the Environment Agency these three structures, comprising of 6 old flap-valves, were failing to meet current standards for fish and eel migration and flood defence

The Environment Agency commissioned a full refurbishment of these sites with the longer term aim of passing the structures back to the landowners.

The project was awarded to Byzak and all three sites would be carried out consecutively to give least impact to the environment and nesting birds.

ACE were commissioned by Byzak to design and supply the replacement flap-valves. Each of the three areas had different issues to resolve but dedicated project management between all three parties allowed work to be completed smoothly on site, with no accidents or environmental incidents.
