Arts & Culture I

n a beautiful seaside city like Dana Point, inspiration can literally be found everywhere. With awe-inspiring vistas, abundant wildlife and interesting person-

alities around every corner, the city attracts artists, musicians, photogra- phers and writers as well as educators and students of the arts. Its identity has also been built on a long and interesting history. From

the city’s namesake, Richard Henry Dana Jr.’s documentation of the area in his 1840 sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast, to its emergence as an early epicenter of the Southern California surf culture, Dana Point has become well known for its vibrant arts and culture scene. Many annual, special events and festivals celebrate arts and culture in a

way that is very uniquely Dana Point. Happenings like the Festival of Whales and the Tall Ships Festival

celebrate the abundance of ocean life in the waters just off the coast and the area’s seafaring past. Groups like Dana Point Coastal Arts and Dana Point Fine Arts Associa- tion host numerous visual arts shows year round, providing plenty of opportunity for local artists to show their work.

DANA POINT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The Dana Point Theater Company produces a unique interpretation of a

Shakespeare classic each summer, outdoors at Heritage Park. Music is also an important part of life here. Home to the Dana Point

Symphony Orchestra, the Doheny Blues and Doheny Days Festivals, the Dana Point Summer Concert Series and many live music venues, the city offers something to please every musical taste. A five-member Arts and Culture Commission acts in an advisory capac-

ity to the City Council on matters relating to artistic, aesthetic and cultural aspects of the city, further enhancing Dana Point’s commitment to build and maintain the city’s wide range of cultural opportunities. The city is also home to the South Orange County School of the Arts.

The SOCSA program is an award-winning performance and visual arts academy located within Dana Hills High School, and it attracts talented instructors and hundreds of gifted students. From plays, musicals and operas to visual arts exhibitions, dance and music concerts, SOCSA plays an important part in maintaining a flourishing arts and culture scene.
