What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the most ad- vanced and effective procedure for the treat- ment of skin cancer. The technique is performed by surgeons who completed for- mal fellowship training after a dermatology residency.

Mohs surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, in one day, under local anes- thesia for both cancer removal and reconstruction. Training in Mohs micrographic surgery involves an additional one to two years of


formal training after residency. The Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship match is coordinated through the San Francisco Matching Program along with 13 other specialty fellowship matches, including facial plastic surgery, ophthalmology, neurosurgery and pediatric otolaryngology. Fellowship training involves extensive training in Mohs micrographic surgery,


cutaneous oncology, dermatopathology, wound care, anatomy and reconstructive surgery. The American College of Mohs Surgery (www.mohscollege.org) sponsors the fellowship-matching process and offers the only route of formal training for this specialty. There are currently only 30 fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons in Georgia. Dr. Joshua Lane is one of these 30 fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons and the only one in Columbus. He remains active in the academic community as faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in the Department of Dermatology in addition to over 100 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, textbooks and textbooks chapters. Initially developed by Dr. Frederic Mohs, the state-of-the-art technique has been con- tinuously refined. The Mohs surgeon is able to detect skin cancer beyond the visible disease to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor layer by layer, while leaving surround- ing healthy tissue intact and unharmed, min- imizing the risk of recurrence and lessening the potential for scarring or disfigurement.


Because the physician is specially trained in surgery, dermatopathology and reconstruc- tion, Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate for the treatment of skin cancer—up to 99%. It is the treatment of choice for skin cancers of the face and other sensitive areas as it relies on the precision of microscopically controlled surgical margins to trace the edges of skin cancer and ensure the complete removal of all tumor during the initial surgery.


Clinical studies conducted at various national and international medical institutions demon- strate that Mohs surgery provides 5-year cure rates exceeding 99% for new cancers and 95% for recurrent cancers.
