Fibre at the ready Wire and cable distributor IEWC has seen a significant increase in sales of Gepco products, particularly the SMPTE 9.2mm hybrid fibre camera cables, to large media companies that have secured contracts to provide coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games and/or the UEFA Euro 2012 Football Championships. “Fibre-optic systems are quickly becoming essential if we’re to keep pace with the bandwidth issues surrounding HDTV and 3DTV,” commented Graham Lay, European audio broadcast market specialist at IEWC. “These Gepco SMPTE hybrid fibre camera cables can handle the high- bandwidth data, deliver the clarity of signal required and are easy to route. Their durability under a wide range of conditions makes them easy to repair when there’s the inevitable problem.”

Also involved with coverage of
the torch relay was Dutch-based company Mobile Viewpoint, which fulfilled the live broadcast. The BBC has used Mobile Viewpoint’s Wireless Multiplex Terminal (WMT) to broadcast the relay live on the internet and BBC channels. The vehicle in front of the relay,
responsible for the live coverage, uses the WMT to transmit the images using a combination of different mobile 3G networks. The WMT uses four to eight SIM cards of different operators to create a stable video connection. Mobile Viewpoint, in cooperation with the BBC, developed Continuous Picture Technology (CPT) to ensure a smooth video
link when driving through the rough countryside with varying mobile coverage conditions.

Boxx TV offers hard Wi-Fi Boxx TV is to provide an enterprise grade Wi-Fi hotspot dedicated to broadcasters attending the London Olympic Games. It is aimed at crews looking to use platforms such as Quicklink, Livestream, Dejero, LiveU, TVU, Livewire or Skype, to upload news from the London Olympic Park. The hotspot is designed for sending live streams or FTP with upload speeds of around 4Mbps. Boxx TV will provide portable
hardware to access this hotspot, so crews with or without broadcasting rights can work from connections in and around the London Olympic park area. The Wi-Fi will be operational around the Aquatic Centre, the Main Stadium, the Westfield shopping centre and the public areas and restaurants. Scott Walker, co-founder of
Boxx TV said: “With hundreds of thousands of mobile phones overloading the 3G networks around the Olympic Park, it is questionable if 3G bonding will be able to offer any usable upload bandwidth for live streaming of FTP feeds. We will be offering uncontended 4Mbps upload internet connections so that broadcasters can stream live and cut their story and file from the areas around the Park.” Email:
