“We do not turn on the functionality if it is not required, so we do not license features we do not need – but it is all there when we need it”
James Crossland, Encompass Digital Media
Thrilling
Harold Vermeulen of Grass Valley, introducing the Encompass case study, explains how its technology has helped Encompass Digital Media
and availability — minimising the glue while ensuring fast recovery through manual and automated failover. Grass Valley pulled together a suite of existing products to provide an integrated solution. That included branding, designed offline and applied at the time of transmission. The TX MAM appliance allows rules to be set against the content for a channel, and which will sound alarms if there is a problem. Automation control also monitors rules as well as the health of the hardware. The K2 Edge playout device is designed with full functionality embedded and features turned on as required. That means a channel can be upgraded to HD, or subtitling added, just by entering a key. “Every channel we build we assume will be an HD, Dolby 5.1, fully branded +1 channel,” Crossland explained. “We do not turn on the functionality if it is not required — so we do not license the features we do not need – but it is all there when we need it.” According to Crossland the
pluggable architecture makes it readily extensible. Most of the functionality is in the one box, the K2 Edge, so there is less glue and therefore more resilience in the chain. Encompass can create a non- linear channel as easily as a linear channel, just by setting different rules. As a system architecture it depends on metadata, but it allows Encompass to give its clients more control over their own metadata to empower them to make the most of their content. — Dick Hobbs
