er and CEO of Metal Roof Innovations, Ltd., the manufacturers of the industry-leading product line S-5!.


John Paul Lawrence: Angelo Borzillo, the co-founder of Galvalume® coating technol- ogy, stated to you once that S-5! is the great- est thing to happen to a metal roof since the creation of Galvalume®. How did S-5!® earn such an endorsement?


Rob Haddock: I’ve known Ange Borzillo for many years. He had participated in a fi eld sur- vey that was sponsored by BIEC, the licensing authority for Galvalume® technology. They wanted to see how it was performing after 20 years in service. He said, “Rob, we went around all over the country looking at these Galvalume® roofs and the material far exceed- ed our expectations. But some of the things we saw people do to roofs were absolutely abom- inable—causing leaks, corrosion and other problems. Your S-5! clamp would have solved 90 percent of the problems we saw!” When BIEC published a book about the history of Galvalume®, Ange autographed the book and wrote me a little note to that effect. We earned that endorsement because the things Ange has said are true.


Lawrence: What was the industry solution before S-5!? Were they drilling into the roofs?


Haddock: People didn’t know how to mount things on standing-seam metal roofs. Differ- ent trades got on the roof, and they mounted things by whatever means was convenient. They set HVAC and gas piping on wood block-


ing, which if treated with tannins and copper salts actually induced corrosion. People just did it by any means they could. There wasn’t a right way; there wasn’t any way at all. They were drilling holes, and actually pinning the panel to the structure, violating the thermal cycling integrity of the roof. They did all those bad things, but no one could point to the “right way” because there just wasn’t one. The whole industry then developed a culture and a mentality that you just can’t put any- thing on these roofs. Manufacturers would say, “If you put anything on our roof, you’re going to void the warranty” There just wasn’t a good way to do it.


Lawrence: What changed?


Haddock: In the 70’s, Galvalume® and structural standing seam came along, and it would outlast galvanized by two or even three times. Still, there wasn’t a good way to mount anything on that roof that was compatible with the life expectancy of the roof, which was now 50, 60—even 70 years. S-5!® en- abled the attachment of ancillaries to modern Galvalume® standing-seam roofi ng with a service life and a performance expectancy that was equivalent to and even exceeded the life of the roof itself. It really helped to propel metal roofi ng to being much more user-friend- ly. It is a solid, fi eld and lab tested solution.


Lawrence: Tell us how you got involved in the metal building industry. What motivated you to get started?


Haddock: Back in another lifetime, I came off the ranch and went to the big city to make my fortune. That was in ’72 or ’73, and I got a job erecting pre-engineered metal build- ings. I worked for various employers over the next couple of years and really felt like I was smarter than my bosses. I was a young guy and full of piss and vinegar. I also had different ideas about how things should be done. So, I started my own company with $40


and a pickup truck. That company became one of the largest of its kind in about a seven-state area. I was active in my industry with respect to trade groups and so on, so I had the oppor- tunity to learn from a lot of the industry’s best pioneers. I retired from that in 1990 and quit the contracting business after 17 years. Then, I got into consulting work in the same fi eld. I had a lot of time then to think, refl ect and innovate. I started tinkering and I got the idea to put


a clamp of sorts on the seam to anchor things to standing seam roofs. I whittled the fi rst ones out of some blocks of wood, and then had one prototyped out of aluminum. I took it to a lab and tested it for holding strength, and I couldn’t believe the tenacity of that part. It just held on like nobody’s business. I realized what I had just come up with was not just a better snow guard. It was a slick way to attach just about anything to a standing-seam roof. And so that’s how S-5!® got started.


Lawrence: S-5! has been a leading company in the metal industry to embrace, promote, and support the concept of solar on metal roofi ng. How important is solar to the metal industry?


Haddock: I think solar in our industry is huge. It’s a natural for metal roofi ng. What really brought it to the forefront for me was when I got a call in 1995 from a guy with BP Solar, who was involved with a solar installation on one of the buildings for the Atlanta Olympics. He said, “I just wanted to tell you how great that works. Your clamp with a Zip-Rib roof is the ultimate for mounting solar.”
