award is a tribute to the hard work VA Speedskating members put in on a daily basis. Personally, it feels great to be rec- ognized for the efforts I put into the skat- ers and club, but the skaters are the ones deserving credit. It was an honor and a privilege to coach VA Speedskating.

Conditioning Coach – Doc Counsilman Science Award The “Doc” Counsilman Award is for a

coach that utilizes scientific techniques/ equipment as an integral part of his/her coaching methods, or has created inno- vative ways to use sport science. Shane Domer has done some amazing work in the field of strength training and maintenance of strength during the competitive season for the US Speedskating Team. Shane has used his knowledge and skill as a strength training coach, not only to maintain a win- ter strength training program through use of weights, jumps and plyometrics, but through use of his strength training pro- tocols, found ways through these means to see strength gains during the season. This has no doubt improved USS’ interna- tional performances across the board in short track and long track speed skating competitions. Shane’s work as a strength coach for USS has been both novel and successful. “Obviously, I’m flattered, humbled and

honored to receive the Doc Counsilman Science Award,” said Domer. “Without the support of the USS Board of Directors, Staff, Coaches and Athletes, I would never have had the chance to develop and imple- ment many of the current protocols we use to optimize our athletes’ performance. I’m thrilled to have the privilege of working for an organization that encourages progres- sive thinking and innovation.”
