US SPEEDSKATING WRAPS A PRODUCTIVE 2012

SPRING BOARD MEETING IN CLEVELAND by Linda Jager Over 100 US Speedskating members

gathered in Cleveland for a productive weekend of committee meetings and the Spring Board of Directors Meeting, April 20-22. “The Spring Board of Director’s Meet-

ing generally has a very busy agenda on all fronts. This year was no exception,” said US Speedskating President Tom Frank. “With the passage of new regula- tions, By-Law changes and other mat- ters, the next several months will be busy as we prepare to get everything in place for the next season and beyond.” Among the many regulations and By-

Law changes, the following are a few highlights: • The Fall World Qualifier for short track will be conducted with time trials and two races at each distance.

• US Short Track Single Distance Championships will include a repechage round similar to World Cups. The top 14 advance from the time trials into the Championships, and the remaining skaters go into the repechage round for a chance to make it back into the Championships.

• Long Track American Cup Sprint (500 and 1000 combined) and Allround (1500 and 3k/5k combined) Overall winners will earn automatic invite to 2013-14 National Training Program.

• Pony division is now for ages 7 and up. No one under the age of 7 can skate at Nationals.

• A new rent-to-own skate program 8 RACING BLADE Summer 2012 www.usspeedskating.org

was approved. Clubs needing skates can obtain them from USS and pay for them through rental revenue at the local level.

• Up to 15 grants of up to $300 will be available for clubs and associations for recruitment programs.

• Elections for US Speedskating Board members will now be conducted online, adding increased efficiency and allowing for a significant cost savings.

• A preview of the new US Speedskating fan apparel and merchandise was shown. The new apparel and merchandise will be available for sale via US Speedskating’s online store very soon.

“The 2012 USS Spring Board Meeting

was a real opportunity to showcase some of the progress we’ve made as an organi- zation this season,” said US Speedskat- ing Executive Director Mark Greenwald. “Not only were we able to share some of our activities and accomplishments in a special video/photo presentation from the season with our membership, but also our staff put on a great experience for everyone who attended. We hope to carry this positive momentum onward, as we continue to build our organization, put ourselves on more stable financial footing, and elevate this organization to the World Class status we all feel it de- serves and can be,” added Greenwald. We are pleased to include the fol-

lowing link to several presentations and documents from the 2012 Spring Board Meeting. n
