Where and when


WHERE IS IT? In the Indian Ocean some 1,243 miles (2,000km) from Africa’s southeast coast. It has an area of 720 sq miles (1,865 sq km) with 205 miles (330 km) of coastline. It includes the island of Rodrigues.

HISTORY/PEOPLE Known to the Arabs since the 10th century, Mauritius has since been occupied by the Dutch, French and British becoming independent in 1968. It is peopled by Indians, Africans, Chinese and Europeans.


CLIMATE/BEST TIME TO GO Mauritius has a tropical climate with coastal temperatures ranging from around 23°C to 30°C while inland temperatures, at 1,969 feet (600 metres) above sea level are three to five degrees cooler. The western and northern regions are warmer and relatively drier and less humid than the east and south.


Winter (May/October) is warm and dry while summer (November/April) is hot, humid and more rainy, especially in January/March. Any (rare) cyclones will be in the months of January and February.


HEALTH No inoculations are needed to visit Mauritius unless visitors are arriving from a yellow fever area in which case a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required.
