THE ISLAND AND WHERE TO STAY
Brief guide to beaches
The lively resort of Grand Baie has the greatest concentration and variety of beautiful beaches, including the popular cove of Pereybere and the northwest marine park of Turtle Bay. The longest and most celebrated stretches of white sand are in the east - such as the 10km Belle Mare Plage and a boat hop from the fishing village of Trou D’Eau Douce, is the tiny, sandy island Île aux Cerfs with translucent water on a sand bar. Trou aux Biches is one of the best beaches on the west coast and further down, are the flat golden sand beaches of Flic en Flac with calm, shallow water. The southern beaches range from the 4km sandy beach at Le Morne, to small beaches at Domaine de Bel Ombre and spectacular underwater scenery at Blue Bay.
Le Morne across the infi nity pool is a favourite elegant hideaway for couples. The popularity of the all-inclusive family-friendly fi ve-star Maritim in Turtle Bay, has increased following its £22million renovation and expansion in 2009. The family-run four-star plus Le Preskil Beach Resort, set on a pretty beach in the southeast near Blue Bay, offers a friendly home away from home for families and the Blue Lagoon Hotel is a good little three star just nearby. Boutique hotels are getting
more popular, prompted by new openings and promoted by tour operators such as Elite Vacations, Enchanting Holidays and Cox & Kings. These boutique properties typically offer water sports, spa facilities and in some cases, access to golf courses. These include the new 51-suite Angsana Balaclava from Banyan Tree’s sister brand, Angsana Resorts, which opened in December 2011 at the picturesque Turtle Bay.
