AMERICAN RACE WALKERS QUALIFY FOR IAAF WORLD CUP


A total of 16 competitors took part in the IAAF World Cup Team Trials in April at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Spots were on the line for Team USA for the 25th IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Saransk, Russia, in both the 10km and 20km events.


On the men’s side, Trevor Barron was the top American finisher in the 20km event in a time of 1:22:13. He will be joined at the World Cup by Tim Seaman, Patrick Stroupe, Nick Christie and Dan Serianni. At the junior 10km distance, Alejandro Chavez led the Americans with a time of 46:06.3 and will be joined by Michael Nemeth, Jonathan Hallman and Nathaniel Roberts on Team USA.


In the women’s 20km, Maria Michta grabbed the win in a time of 1:35:56. She will be joined on Team USA by Erin Gray, Lauren Forgues, Katie Burnett and Solomiya Login. In the junior women’s 10km, Maite Moscoso and Abby Dunn each qualified for the World Cup.


CHEROBON-BAWCOM, TRAFEH WIN USA 15KM TITLES


Mo Trafeh and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom dominated the men’s and women’s fields at the USA 15km Championships in March in Jacksonville, Fla.


Trafeh ran 43:23 to win his third 15km title while Cherobon- Bawcom ran 49:41 to win her first title at 15km. The Championships were hosted for the 19th time by the 35th Gate River Run. In addition to the $60,000 individual prize structure, the Championship featured competition between the men and women in the form of a $5,000 equalizer bonus as well as a $20,000 team competition named the TenBroeck Cup.

In the women’s competition with four miles remaining it was a race between Cherobon-Bawcom, Lindsey Scherf, Molly Huddle and Maegen Krifchin. At mile six Huddle and Cherobon- Bawcom pulled away from the field and by the seventh mile the order of finish was set with Huddle, Krifchin and Scherf following.


Trafeh scored a 1:14 victory over Christopher Landry for his third consecutive 15km title. Tim Ritchie took third in 44:41.


Team USA Minnesota won the TenBroeck Cup title by seven seconds over the Boulder Running Company. Katie McGregor, Emily Brown, and Meghan Peyton took the honors as Team Minnesota's women won the team competition for the third time. On the men's side, Adidas McMillan Elite defended their title from 2011 with Ben Bruce, Scott Smith, and Nick Arciniaga capturing the team championship.


BROADBENT, DAY WIN INDOOR COMBINED EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS


Eric Broadbent and Sharon Day both claimed their first USA Indoor Combined Events Championship in March as numerous championship and facility records fell at Gladstein Field House on the campus of Indiana University.


Broadbent racked up five personal best marks over the two days of competition, and while he was in the lead going into the last event, there were still five men in contention for the gold medal at the start of the 1,000 meters. Broadbent turned in an impressive nine second personal best (2:39.17) to secure his first USA title with 5,908 points.


David Klech finished in second with 5,809 points in a narrow victory over defending champion Nick Adcock with 5,796 points.
