Taylored Soundwas commissioned to hire and install the PA system for the recent SPE Offshore Europe conference and exhibition, held at the AECC in Aberdeen. A total of 66 Community R.25s were used to provide coverage across the halls of the largest upstream oil and gas event outside of North America. A Symetrix Solus 8 provided paging configuration and control, while the 28,000W available from three Powersoft K8 amplifiers provided ample headroom for the system. www.communitypro.comwww.tayloredsound.co.uk

Famous north London venue is upgraded ahead of Heineken House residency during the Olympics, writes Dave Robinson
ATEIS UK has been working alongside ADT Fire and Security on the refurbishment of Alexandra Palace ready for the 2012 Olympics and beyond. The north London landmark has been selected as the official destination of Holland Heineken House for the duration of the Games.

90%
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012, the ‘House’ has become a leading hospitality venue for the athletes, support staff and guests of the Dutch Olympic team. Alexandra Palace will be transformed into a “celebration of Dutch achievements and culture” for the summer. The upgrading of the building has included the installation of two linked IDA8 voice alarm racks serving the main building and the ice rink. The whole system is interfaced to the fire detection systems for evacuation purposes, but also has comprehensive input facilities for microphones to be used in the exhibition halls and for music to be played throughout the venue. The IDA8 matched the
requirement for the project as it included fibre-optic networking between the racks which are hundreds of metres apart as well as comprehensive

DSP processing to carefully match venue acoustics and to deal with multiple microphone input points. Ateis was also able to help
develop the design of the system by suggesting Messenger DSP steerable column loudspeakers for the two large foyer areas of the venue. In the initial design, more than 20 ordinary column speakers were included, but Ateis was able to re-model these areas using just one pair of Messenger active line arrays in each area.
Project engineer
John Andrews states: “Although the messenger loudspeakers were more costly than the original speakers, there was a substantial saving on the installation, an improved appearance in the venue and a real upgrade in performance.” The installation also
features the new Ateis Class D amplifiers. Ateis UK MD Neil
Voce says: “Although Ateis seemed a bit behind the curve on providing Class D, we think it was worth the wait. The new DPA4250 are EN54-16 certified, sonically excellent, over 90% efficient in use and use less than 30mA in standby – a great result for saving batteries on big VA systems.” Four sub-bass units have been installed over the ice rink to enhance the sound during future competitive events.
Ateis also teamed up with Stan Boivin who designed the main room speaker layouts using SoundTube loudspeakers. “The SoundTubes are ideal for the venue as there are already plentiful mounting positions in the main halls for this ‘top down’ solution. The speakers are flexible in a venue which hosts so many different functions,” says Voce. www.ateis.co.uk
