welcome EDITOR’S COMMENT

“We can use large photos of glamorous violinists at last. Isn’t that what every editor wants?”

IF YOU DIDN’T make the journey to PLASA Focus last month, then you missed out. I knew I’d got my train fare’s worth to rainy Leeds when, within half an hour of being there, I’d bagged a half-dozen photos and a couple of decent stories to boot. And all before lunch! (That gratismidday feeding frenzy is a key component of the event, of course.) PLASA management must be wondering though: with the London event stubbornly refusing to grow, however the organiser approaches it, and the countdown on Earls Court’s very existence ticking away –AND the announcement of the LPN event next year (see last month’s PSNEurope) – is it time PLASA looked to solely localised shows as the business model? My review is on p4, see what you think. I’m loving this redesigned cover look for PSNEurope. It means we can use large photos of glamorous, internationally-renowned violinists at last! Isn’t that what every editor wants?! Thanks to Howard at Source for helping out with this picture: it demonstrates the runaway-success-that-was-the- HHB-FlashMic in use at a Classic FM Awards ceremony (That’s the station’s Sarah Kirkup talking to champion fiddler Nicola Benedetti.) Kevin Hilton’s feature on location recorders begins on p33. As we went to press, we learned that action on the Digital Economy Act had been delayed – see our story wedged into p20. It’s a blow against everyone who stands against music piracy (and that’s you, right?). At least the UK High Court’s 1 May ruling that forces five ISPs to block Pirate Bay is a move in the right direction. Dave Robinson
