Case studies 1/9 Toyota Driving beyond manufacture


Toyota considers itself a leader in environmental management, with a “360-degree” approach to managing its impacts that begins with vehicle design and ends with product disposal at end-of-life. This approach means that the company looks beyond the vehicles it manufactures for opportunities to create savings alongside improved performance. A project is currently under way aimed at achieving 20% reductions in energy use across all sites owned by Toyota UK – as well as its network of around 230 independent retailers.


Funding for the project exceeds £500,000, but with combined energy costs across the company’s network of associated premises coming in at around £6M a year, achieving the 20% goal will save £1.2M in the first year alone. The programme began in 2009 with a pilot scheme that saw energy monitoring equipment installed in 16 dealer- ships. Toyota worked with the Carbon
