33rd Annual Irish Gaming Show

John Purcell, editor of GamBet News, shares his thoughts on the recent Irish Gaming Show in Dublin

33rd Annual Irish Gaming Show 2012 Report

Feery, organisers of the Irish Gaming Show had a sold out show with new and varied products for the Irish market, but wondered what will the depressed Irish market do in 2012? Thankfully, this was responded to in inimitable

W

Irish style with operators actively looking for product and services in a market that has been reticent to invest over the last few years owing to the potential gaming legislation change expected by the Irish government. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to operators that they still have a business to run in one of the most conducive environments for gaming operators in Europe and as such, they have to ensure they have the appropriate up to date product offerings for their consumers. The anticipated legislative change is not expected to happen for a while and even if it was announced

tomorrow, it has been stated that the framework for such legislation will provide a long enough lead time for operators that will allow them to adjust without having to reinvent the wheel. Therefore, onwards and upwards in a market where the challenges it faces are more retail and hospitality issues rather than gaming. The adult gaming market has proved relatively robust and the next wave of developments is looking to capture the next generation with more entertainment products as it is becoming increasingly obvious that the traditional slots player population is decreasing while we are seeing specific increases in more social gaming trends, specifically online gaming, community gaming and bingo. This was reflected in the Irish show with an

increased offering of slots that had a community gaming element as well as bingo, keno and video lottery terminals. The strong representation of the after market for slots was well represented with Funfair Casino of Ireland offering high performing slots from leading manufacturers. The strong amusement sector had its usual fare with Harry Levy, TobyCo, Brent and Crown out in full force and reporting strong sales from the show floor. The staple novelty suppliers of ITM and NoveltyWorld

combined with suppliers of safes (Dominator IRL), cash handling (Soubar Mercantile and Scan Coin Ireland), Jukeboxes (Arion & Sound Leisure) and spares (Suzo Happ & Hazel Electronics) to provide a well-rounded show for operators. However, the staple Irish gaming industry diet of Franco products came to the fore with Olympic Sales and AIM providing the latest equipment. Particularly noteworthy were the Genesis games strong showing and the first time exhibition of Astra Games at the Irish show. An Irish Gaming Industry seminar program was

delivered to provide a ‘state of the nation’ overview of the Irish market with a packed seminar room displaying again the increasing hunger of Irish operators to want to progress in a challenging environment. Major issues highlighted included the untouched VLT opportunity in Ireland as well as the increasing importance of innovation in gaming and adding new, more expansive revenue streams to Irish gaming operators. With a spring in their step and a strong desire to increase business, the Irish Gaming Show once again proved to be invaluable for operators and vendors alike. Here’s looking forward to next year!
