Sinus Award for European Parlamentarium

Integrator Electrosonic is among the award winners

European Parliament visitor centre attracts 100,000 people in six months

By Paddy Baker

The AV installation at the European Parliament’s new visitors’ centre – known as the Parlamentarium – received a major accolade last month at Prolight + Sound with the presentation of the Sinus – Systems Integration Award. The award was presented to the centre’s general planner, Atelier Brückner of Stuttgart, principal AV systems integrator Electrosonic of the UK, the European Parliament and four other companies involved in the planning and equipping of the exhibit. Covering 3,000sqm and three storeys,

the Parlamentarium takes visitors on a journey into the heart of European politics. Opening in October 2011, it attracted over 100,000 visitors to Brussels in its first six months. The Parlamentarium illustrates the EU’s motto, ‘United in Diversity’, in a number of ways. For instance, the graphic concept uses cross-fading images of different language-specific typefaces, and visitors can call up a personalised media guide in any of 23 languages. After passing through a ‘time tunnel’ telling the story of European integration, visitors enter two circular

rooms where they are immersed in a 360º film presentation. This illustrates the work of the European Parliament and its 736 members. The majority of the 39 Panasonic projectors in the Parlamentarium are in these two rooms; edge blending and warping is carried out by Dataton Watchout. The ‘United in Diversity’ room is

centred around a floor map, showing a Europe with no borders. Visitors walk on this map, pushing scanner trolleys. At any of the so-called ‘hot spots’ on the map, an RFID trigger in the floor sends information to a monitor mounted in the top of the trolley. This information, relating to European institutions and significant events in the Parliament’s regulatory history, is relevant to the location on the map. In the ceiling above is a three- dimensional multi-colour LED array, in the shape of Europe. This consists of about 13,000 individually controlled illuminated balls, from Atlantic Star, in five layers. It responds to the facts and statistics being screened below; the higher the statistic, the greater the intensity of the colours it displays. Throughout the Parlamentarium, content is stored and replayed from 132 DVS computers, which are all networked, plus some video players and MP3 players for audio-only exhibits. There are also around 40 interactive touchscreens. The Sinus award recognises unusual
