Education Resources Awards winners reflect ‘the very best in education’

W

inners of the 14th annual prestigious Education Resources Awards (ERAs) were announced on Friday 16th March 2012 at a gala event held at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham, on the second evening of The Education Show 2012.

The Awards are organised by the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) and Brilliant Marketing Solutions Ltd, and celebrate the innovative approach to learning and teaching by teachers, institutions and organisations from all levels of education.

Ray Barker, director of BESA comments: “The ERAs are judged by an independent panel of education experts, all teaching and learning professionals, providing peace of mind to the UK’s teachers that the judging process is robust. The chosen winners reflect the needs of the education sector right now, detailing innovative and cost-effective resources, exemplary companies and proven approaches. They should be seen as representing the very best in education.”

The Education Resources Awards are sponsored by Berol, Findel Education, Hope Education and supported by the National Association of Head Teachers, The Schools Network, nasen and UK Trade & Investment. The Education Guardian is the media partner for the Awards.

Take time to Thank A Teacher

nline educational community Rafi.ki Kidogo has launched the Global Ambassadors Project for primary school students worldwide. The project is designed to inspire young people to make the world a better place by participating in campaigns about global issues that are important to them through a variety of creative media. Access to the Ambassador Project resources and activities is through Rafi.ki Kidogo, the online learning community for four to 11 year olds and their teachers. The collection of activities and ‘missions’ in the project aim to educate children in an understanding of the media, and to develop the idea of using campaign techniques to create positive changes in the world around them.

A brand new option A

N

o one ever forgets a good teacher. They provide guidance to help their pupils reach their potential now or in years to come, set them on the right path or steer them from going down the wrong one and if you ask a current or former pupil to name their favourite teacher, almost all will have fond memories to share.

The Thank A Teacher campaign launched by The Pearson Teaching Awards is in its 15th year and aims to encourage pupils past and present, as well as parents, to take time out to acknowledge the difference a teacher, teaching assistant or head teacher has made to their lives and, simply thank them.

This year the inaugural Thank A Teacher Day will be held on 20th June 2012 to support the campaign. The day provides an opportunity for children and parents to thank a teacher and tell their personal stories on the impression a teacher has made on them. On and after this day throughout the year messages of thanks can be made on www.thankateacher.co.uk.

new range of vocational qualifications designed for students aged 16+ has been launched by major awarding body, OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations).

Cambridge TECs are a new vocational option designed to motivate and inspire students whilst rewarding their achievements in major programmes of learning. Valuable support in the form of visiting moderators and in-depth resource tools will be available free of charge to schools and colleges to reinforce teaching.

Following consultation with employers, industry specialists and teachers, the knowledge and skills embedded in the new Cambridge TECs will provide relevant experience for students wishing to progress into employment or higher education. Cambridge TECs have UCAS points so they are recognised for entry to higher education.

The Cambridge TECs are offered as Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Business, IT, and Health and Social Care, for teaching by schools and colleges from September 2012. Qualifications in Media, Art and Design, Science and Sport will follow from this September to broaden the subject range. Flexibility is incorporated in Cambridge TECs in the form of minimal mandatory units, internal assessment, progressive grading from pass through to a starred distinction, optional work experience, and a range of qualification sizes at each level including a 360 Guided Learning Hours Introductory Diploma, enabling the qualifications to fit a wide range of learning programmes.

By posting a message on the website or filming and uploading a short, 20 to 30 second video, each teacher who receives a thank you will be sent a card of appreciation. They will also automatically be nominated to be in the running for recognition at The Pearson Teaching Award which will be hosted at a star studded ceremony broadcast on BBC Two. Commenting on Thank A Teacher, Will Wyatt, Chair of the Teaching Awards Trust says: “Thank A Teacher has proved a very popular way for school children and parents to pay tribute to a teacher who has gone above and beyond. We’d like to think that it is as much about the pupils and their current and future successes as it is about recognition for the teachers. “We’d like to encourage people to go online and take part because not only will every teacher thanked receive a thank you card, but there is a chance that your nominated teacher could find themselves being presented with an award on the BBC and this is a great boost to pupil and teacher morale.”

The Thank A Teacher campaign is not only supported by actress and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, Emma Thompson, but also a wide range of celebrities who have pledged their support and thanked the teachers they believe helped them get to where they are today. In 2011 the Thank A Teacher campaign attracted a record number of 19,716 nominations and this year the figure is expected to be exceeded significantly.
