Grip the top of the stick to prevent against a slap check. “You see Miles Thompson at Albany right now — defensemen try to take the ball away from him, but they can’t because he’s got that solid hand on the stick.”

Face shoulders outward to shield the defenseman and hide your stick and hands.

Slide your top hand down the shaft and into shooting position, about 6-8 inches from your bottom hand, which should not move.

Left arm tight to body so he can’t get underneath you.

Protect your stick with body between defenseman and ball. Cock your stick back in shooting position.

“I used to be a stand-still shooter. I used to think I had to have the time-and-room, step-down shot. But I remember seeing Kyle Harrison do [the jump shot] at Hopkins a lot, so I wanted to add it to my repertoire.”

Release high and shoot overhand, which helps keep the ball hidden from the goalie. Let it rip at the highest point of your jump.

Dodge on an angle toward the goalie. Your torso will be square to the cage upon release. “You’re going to fade away when you push off, so keep your line toward the net as much as possible after initial contact.”
