Dutch iris are bulbous iris of recent origin, hybridized in the early part of this century by Dutch growers who crossed Spanish iris with other species. They delight in a soil that becomes dry and warm in summer, which the bulbs need to ripen properly. The elegant flow- ers have a light, airy structure. Use: border, cut. IRIS, DWARF Top Size


These dwarf bulbous iris are easy flowering and very hardy. The plant are only 4" to 6" tall and the miniature, velvety iris flowers bloom very early in spring. The leaves are curious, like green, horny-pointed antennae. The bulbs quickly produce offsets that multiply into gener- ous drifts of color. Use: border, natural, rckgdn. I. latifolia (formerly I. xiphioides) #IR20 This species probably originated in Spain or Portugal and was transported to England by merchant seamen. Larger than the Dutch and Spanish iris, these bulbs prefer a dampish, semi-shaded location and neutral to acid soil. The robust flowers, 2 to 3 per stem, are shades of rose, lavender, pink, purple, white and blue. Blooms appear in early to midsummer. Use: border, cut, natural.
