Companies who fell the most last month were Activision, Take-Two and 505 Games. All three publishers performed strongly in May on the back of major releases Diablo III, Max Payne 3 and Sniper Elite V2, but with no big-selling new titles out in June, they’ve tumbled down the list.

Xbox 360 and PS3 are still dominant, accounting for around 60 per cent of the money generated by games at retail. However, a lack of major games last month has seen both consoles lose market share month-on-month in terms of units. PC lost significant ground in June. The platform enjoyed a fruitful May following the release of Diablo III.

On the surface it may look like very little has changed in the market share by format charts, but in reality all of the handheld consoles have seen an upturn in software sales, a result no doubt of the summer months with consumers buying portable games to play on their holidays. DS’ large install base keeps it ahead of 3DS and Vita in the rankings, although 3DS is gaining ground in value terms.
