PSEUDOMONAS BUG FOUND IN ALL NORTHERN IRELAND NEONATAL UNITS


TRACES OF THE deadly Pseudomonas infection that has killed four babies this year in Northern Ireland have been found in every neonatal unit in the country, it has been revealed. The worrying findings comes in the same week that ministers rveported at least 26 other people have died from the bug in the country over the past three years. A review into the latest deaths has revealed Pseudomonas colonisation in water samples in a number of taps in all neonatal units across the country. Every fitting is now being replaced with ultra-violet technology, which is widely accepted to be effective in killing water-borne bacteria such as Pseudomonas. The review team is due to publish its preliminary results and recommendations on 1 March, advising trusts on

ROBOTS ROAM WARDS OF SCOTTISH HOSPITAL


ROBOTS WILL BE introduced to the New South Glasgow Hospital as part of the first UK order for Swisslog automated guided vehicles (AGVs). Already in use in medical centres elsewhere around the world, the TransCar AGVs will ferry goods including sterile products, food, linen and waste, providing a safer system of work and


reducing moving and handling injuries. They will use dedicated FM lifts that are segregated for clean and dirty goods and will travel in non-public corridors, reducing the risk of infection. In total, the hospital, which will be the largest critical care complex in Scotland, will use 22 of the systems. A spokesman for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde said: “An automated material transfer system


was one of the key requirements for facilities management in the new hospitals as the size, scope and activity of clinical and non- clinical functions made such a system essential to meet the logistical workloads.” TransCar operates totally automatically, interfacing with lifts and doors as required along the vehicle’s journey.


Health projects worth SR2 billion launched in Hail, KSA Saudi Arabia’s Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah recently launched SR2 billion worth of health projects in the Hail region. He also announced King Abdullah’s approval of the establishment of a 200-bed maternity and children’s hospital at a cost of SR400 million.


Deadline to meet global standards for Dubai hospitals All hospitals in Dubai have been given a deadline to acquire international accreditations in an effort to raise standards. The DHA said it has given all hospitals in the emirate until the end of this year to get accredited. 61% of hospitals are already accreditated, while 29% are in the process of obtaining it.


Dubai hospitals need digital upgrade, study says More than 20% of hospitals in Dubai rely solely on paper and filing systems to keep track of patient records, according to a study by the DHA and the emirate’s healthcare information society. Only 39% of all hospitals had made moves to switch to electronic systems.


Bahrain’s $1.6bn Dilmunia Health Island put out to tender Dilmunia Health Island project has requested tenders for the first phase of infrastructure work. The first of four infrastructure development phases, has been offered to 30 contractors. The winning firm will be appointed by the end of the Q1 of 2012 with work due to start in Q2.
