QUESTIONSANDANSWERS JIHAD HUSSAMI Marketing Director, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (EEMEA), Hill-Rom

Hill-Rom’s Total Room Solution helps strike the right balance between clinical efficacy and room design by combining a pleasing appearance with state-of-the- art technology. The editorial team got a moment with Mr Hussami at Arab Health in January to talk about how room design can improve patient and caregiver safety, optimize patient mobility and how it can affect infection control.

Q. Can you give us examples of how the Total Room Solution improves patient safety? A. Hill-Rom takes a comprehensive approach to patient safety that includes improved safety protocols and change management, innovative software, beds, surfaces, and advanced communications that work together to improve patient safety outcomes as well as actionable repor ting and analysis to drive evidence- based, continuous improvements. For instance, our No Falls™ programme addresses the leading cause of death in hospitalized people over age 65. The programme brings together Hill-Rom’s ‘smar t’ beds, patient safety software built on the NaviCare®

Q. How does the Total Room Solution optimise patient mobility? A. One of the ways by which caregivers help their patients recover quickly is through optimising patient mobility. Many studies have confirmed the negative impact resulting from long-term immobility, including pulmonary, cardiovascular, musculo-skeletal, and skin complications. Hill-Rom offers products that enable caregivers and patients achieve a wide range of positions for optimal care. Our beds are equipped with our proprietary Auto Contour feature, which enhances safety and allows for easier patient positioning. We have Head-of-Bed angle indicators that help ensure proper elevation. The Liko Overhead Lifts allow individuals to adjust and move in and out of bed with minimal outside assistance. There are different models that enable easy matching of lift size and capacity to patient size and medical condition.

platform, and our communication technologies. We have seen fall rates dramatically decrease in many medical facilities that use this programme thereby increasing patient safety. This is significant considering that nearly 50% of hospitalised patients are at risk of falling during their stay. Moreover, our Clear Lungs™ programme is designed to reduce the risk of pulmonary complications, par ticularly in the intensive care unit. Hill-Rom’s NaviCare® patient monitoring software, coupled with our flagship TotalCare® bed system, helps accelerate patient mobilization and reduce the potential for ventilator-associated pneumonia. These are all aspects of the Total Room Solution, which we believe will significantly change how hospital rooms are conceptualised and built in the years to come.

Q. How can room design and layout reduce caregiver injuries and improve the workflow? A. Bed elevation is a practical and simple example. With adjustable
