TRANSFORMING
HEALTHCARE THROUGH COLLABORATIVE MHEALTH
By: Tobias Alpsten, iPlato, London
covering nearly the entire world population it is easy to see the appeal of mHealth – both in developed and emerging health economies.

THE QUESTION TO ASK What is mHealth and, more importantly, how exactly will it transform healthy life expectancy and reduce the cost of care? In my seven years in mHealth I have been struck by the remarkable
variety of solutions that fit under the mHealth banner. As often happens in emerging sectors, each provider feels that their solution IS mHealth – implying that others have got the definition or, at least, their understanding wrong. In the coming years I am confident that an organisation (or perhaps a few) will emerge that embodies mHealth just as Google has come to represent internet search and Facebook is social networks. For now, however, we much accept that mHealth is a mash-up of mobile telecoms, medical devices, internet technologies and healthcare IT which, together with medical and behavioural
ealthcare systems around the world are united in the pursuit of transformational ideas that can help them cope with ever increasing demand for care. With more than five billion mobile phones in use globally and mobile networks
sciences, aims to improve the health of people. This may sound a little complicated but it is the job for the mHealth sector to, perhaps more than inventing new ‘things’, bring together existing components and skills to form comprehensive, meaningful and scalable services. Within this exceptionally compelling opportunity to ‘do good’, to
innovate and to create wealth remote vital signs monitoring, home diagnostics, medication management support, mobile access to patient records, remote working tools for healthcare professionals (and more) can all fit under the mHealth umbrella. This variety is good because it means that many organisations can find a niche and make it their own. Governments, healthcare payers and other stakeholders should embrace and encourage a dynamic diversity through investment and legislation because, right now, we are still creating this market. +
