CARETTE SECTIONAL TRACK

early scale years. Many layouts were just a notch or two above tinplate think- ing. If a serious hobbyist wanted a truly prototype track plan, it pretty much had to be hand laid. Thanks to Marklin’s 1890 standardized gauges and manufac- ture, worry about preventing myriad possible shorts circuits wasn’t worri- some to clockwork and live steam hob- byists a hundred years ago. Our pre- World War I clockwork trains were simple, O gauge entry-level toys for chil- dren with nothing more than switches and crossovers. Being small, they didn’t attract adults. Carette’s large radius O Gauge circle was 4′-0″; its Gauge I, 6′-0″; Gauge II, 7′-2″; and Gauge III, 9′-4″, not the sort of geometry to which the aver- age American home could afford space, nor suited for small tots. World War I spelled the end of large gauge manufacture. Gauge I continued for a while into the 1920’s, but the larg- er ones died out. It was a different world, a new economy, and new post- war homes were being built smaller. O gauge live steam went out of fashion as electric line power became a reality.

RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN

Basic, cheap clockwork train manufac- ture remained for young children up to and after World War II. Bing’s 1906 electric,

track. The track’s straights, curves, left and right hand points, crossings, and a turntable were certainly enough to get one started.

Many of the structure types in this volume are long gone: coal- ing towers, water towers, ash hoists. We’ve gone back over fifty years to find representative examples of a wide variety of railroad buildings once commonly seen on railroads from coast to coast. We’ve included diesel facilities as well. Whether you scratch build or prefer kit building, there is much for you in this handy volume.

Here are plans for roundhouses, diesel sheds, water towers, track scales, pump houses, icing platforms, ash hoists and pits, wood and concrete coaling tow- ers, coaling ramp, sand towers, dispatcher’s offices, telegraph office, phone box, signal towers, flood light tower, yard offices, and more.
