be 30 or 40 shrimp boats in Shem Creek. I think we’re down to less than a dozen now.” Shrimpers can spend 12- to 16- hour days on the water. Tey pay a crew, tear up nets and use fuel with no guarantee of a good catch. And since the shrimp season coincides with the hurricane season, weather also can be an issue. Several boats that called Shem Creek home were destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. While fuel and maintenance costs continue to rise, the price of shrimp has remained stagnant, held down by competition from abroad.

“What has really hurt the indus-

try more than anything in the last 10 years would be the imported shrimp, the pond-raised shrimp that are being raised overseas,” said Magwood. “Where it probably costs an American shrimper three dol- lars a pound to produce a pound of shrimp, it’s probably 50 cents to a dollar for the imported shrimp.” More than ever, Magwood and

Harvey believe now is the time to support Mount Pleasant’s shrimp- ing community. Te Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival is a time- honored way to do just that.

The Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival moved from Alhambra Hall to

Waterfront Park in 2010. Town organizers cited safety, space and parking as reasons for the move. Festivities include marine exhibits, crafts, seafood eating contests and live entertainment. Photos courtesy of the town of Mount Pleasant.

“It’s very beneficial. It lets the shrimpers know that people ap- preciate the work they do,” said Magwood. “Tis festival is near and dear to our hearts,” Harvey added. “Te Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival just gets right to the heart of what we’re all about here as a town. We’re a waterfront town.”

The 25th Annual Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival is Sunday, April 29, 2012, 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Memorial Waterfront Park. For more information, visit www.comeonovermp.com.
