and the promise is, ‘you’re going to get wet!’ If you’re more culturally inclined, The Museum of Science and Industry houses over 400 interactive displays and the city’s latest pride and joy is the Museum of Art.

It’s impossible to digest Tampa in a day so take your time for nature, sport, history or just fun.

LAKELAND & WINTER HAVEN Moving 32 miles (51km) inland from Tampa is the city of Lakeland, and guess what, it has lots of lakes in its borders…38 named ones plus a lot unnamed! Where you have lakes you have swans, now incorporated into the city’s culture. Perhaps the most famous of these delightful

waters is Lake Mirror and Promenade in downtown Lakeland around the Munn Historic District where many old shops display antiques. A visit to The Polk Museum of Art is a highlight

for its displays of American art and sculptures, including work by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. New to Winter Haven is LEGOLAND Florida,

a 150-acre interactive theme park dedicated to families with children aged 2-12. There are more than 50 rides, shows and attractions. Another new addition is the Winter Haven

Downtown Trailhead Park, a mecca for kids. Like Lakeland, Winter Haven uses its surrounding lakes for recreation, activities and fun.

SEBRING A tourist attraction if only to see how the main streets are designed in a circular pattern, an idea of the city’s founder, George Sebring, a pottery manufacturer from Ohio. Not surprisingly, it soon became known as the City on the Circle and you walk into The Downtown Historic District to discover its history and peruse boutiques and galleries in the pretty, old buildings. You may even take a ghost tour! The name Sebring is also well known to speed fans. Every March, Sebring International Raceway holds a 12-hour endurance car race, attracting fans from all over the world. Above Sebring on the map is Avon Park,

which has many hotels to suit all budgets and is The Morse Museum houses the Morse Tiffany at the

world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

a good point to stay if you are planning to branch out in any direction across Florida. Orlando, Tampa and Sarasota are all around 60 miles (96km) away.

VERO BEACH Our last stop in central Florida is the Treasure Coast on the east. Vero Beach, one of Florida’s prettiest small coastal towns, and Sebastian are homes to historical sites, learning centres, manatee observation posts and fishing museums. The McLarty Museum in Vero Beach houses

glittering spoils from a shipwrecked Spanish fleet. As you would expect in a beach area, there’s

airboats, kayaks, yacht charters, cruise boats and every sort of water sport imaginable. Down the coast from Vero Beach is Fort

Pierce, one of the area’s oldest communities. The city is proud to show off its history, but is also home to top educational facilities. Visitors can join motorised kayak adventures, deep-sea fishing trips and Indian River Lagoon and Swampland boat tours.
