KEY ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

Our specialist environmental services guide clients’ right through the life-cycle of a power and water project; from strategic level planning to decommissioning.

Strategic Environmental Assessment The environmental implications of strategic actions are often overlooked in this region with assessments only beginning during the project design stage. However, many of the most environmentally significant issues relate to strategic planning decisions, such as the selection of suitable sites, identification of fuel types to be used for certain projects and the application of local or international standards. We have unmatched experience for wide scale plans and programmes in various countries and government sectors.

Environmental Support - Project Planning Stage Our teams of specialists can provide support on almost all aspects of the project planning stage. Input to site selection studies, best available technology (BAT) analysis, and preliminary environmental modeling and assessments can all be used to ensure that the most of the significant potential impacts associated with a project have been avoided prior to detailed design even commencing.

Environment Support - Environmental Approval Stage

In order to build a power and water project and to secure financing from an international lending institution, a project must obtain local environmental approval and meet the stringent requirements of the World Bank/ IFC, and the Equator Principles. WSP is highly experienced in carrying out Scoping Studies, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Social and Environmental Assessments (SEAs) in order to obtain local and international environmental project approvals for power and water projects in the region. Our pragmatic approach, understanding of local and international environmental requirements and our relationship with local regulators facilitates a speedy path through the planning approval process.

Social and Environmental Management Planning A key part of the process from an environmental perspective is ensuring that mitigation actions, identified during the Environmental Approval Stage, are implemented. This can include management during the construction and subsequent operational phases to reduce or remove otherwise significant impacts. We have a dedicated environmental management team with a wealth of experience preparing environmental management plans and systems for all stages of the project lifecycle.
