OKLAHOMA OUTSI DE

ergreens or is it more of a stripped- down, barren look? I think ever- greens enhance the landscape by adding color and depth. They also provide homes and hiding places for birds and other wildlife. Many of them get quite big, unless the name of the plant is preceded by the word ‘dwarf’ so you should allow plenty of space for them to grow. Upright hol- lies, laurels, live oaks and magnolia are just a few types of broadleaf ev- ergreens that kick the landscape up a notch. Upright junipers, Arizona cypress, blue atlas cedar and mugo pine are great choices for signature plants in the landscape. Don’t forget about the tall growing pines either, as they will make great windbreaks on the north border of the property. The selection of these and many more evergreens is quite good at landscape nurseries and garden centers these days. If you’re scan- ning the backyard or acreage and all you see is leafless shrubs and trees, why not consider planting a few evergreens this spring?

The last thing I want to encourage

everyone to do this spring is plant at least one tree. I have heard that millions of trees have been lost due to last year’s heat wave and record- setting drought. We can start the healing process for our environment by simply planting a tree this spring. Choose one that will fi t in your lo- cation, give you good spring color, tolerate Oklahoma extremes, and have good fall color. Once again, rely upon your local nurseryman for the tried and true varieties for your part of the state.

The sidebar lists a few excellent trees for Oklahoma conditions. Best regards and happy gardening in 2012!
