choral

Our middle school family and consumer education department makes gingerbread houses and displays them at our holiday concert. The musicians are proud to show off their creations and the holiday spirit is festive.

Additionally, co-curricular social studies and choral music department projects for grades 3-7 can revolve around the study of foreign countries and the singing of “The Picnic of the World,” arranged by John Forster, or the study of the U.S. and the singing of “Fifty Nifty United States” by Ray Charles or “Fifty Great States” by Mark Weston.

Have your school scholarship foundation run their fundraiser in your school lobby at your music department’s concert or performance. This might be a silent auc- tion, a cookbook sale, or a time and talent event. Have your music department donate something musical to the event.

Personal Emails and Phone Calls – “You can catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar.” This adage is certainly true when dealing with parents. Getting parents on your side and involved in your music program has a better chance of happen- ing if you connect with them personally. A call or email when their child has done something particularly well is much ap- preciated. So often we, as teachers, are

quick to complain when a student doesn’t do something correctly, but slow to act when our students do something great. Reversing that trend and seeing the posi- tive aspects over the negative occurrences will instill an atmosphere of positivity in your choral program.

This after all, is what makes our work in music, the joy that it provides. Positive energy, shared with our students and their parents, will go a long way in making all of our lives happier.
