Sure-Fire Ways to Involve Parents Lynn Seidl, WMEA State Chair, Choral

In these tumultuous times having parents in your camp, on your side and in- volved in your pro- gram is a sure-fire way to promote your program, increase student numbers and champion the pro-

gram with administration. This article will provide a list of ways to involve parents in your music program. Some of these ideas were solicited from fellow music teach- ers and other ideas came from events that were sponsored in my school district.

Booster Clubs – This is the most common way to provide help for your music depart- ment. Start a club, elect parent officers and have them appoint committee heads. Not only will you get much needed help with fundraisers, uniform hand out and collec-

tion and other necessary, time consuming tasks, but parents can be involved and will know that they and their families are an integral part of the music program.

Alumni Night or Concert Sing-a-Longs – Designate a concert to feature alumni on a selection which is a tradition in your school music program. The Hallelujah Chorus is an excellent selection for band and choir members alike and once they have learned it they will never forget it. If you want to involve parents who are not alumni, pick something a bit easier and have a pre-concert rehearsal to teach them the melody to the song and then in- vite them up when the time comes. Your singers will beam with pride when mom, dad and older brothers and sisters have joined them on the risers.

Joining Forces – Combine with another teacher, department or organization at

your concert or performance. Join forces with the art teacher and put together an art show with a concert. It will draw even more audience members to the concert and the cooperative spirit between the fine arts department staff members can be cultured.
