Secrets to Low Turnover Nobody’s in a better position to share wisdom about creating a
long-term team of employees than JoAnn Bennett, who recently won the District Turnover award for the second year in a row (She also took home the District of the Year award for the third year in a row!). JoAnn credits a solid base of dependable, tenured employees for giving her
district the luxury of a great support system. In District #17, her managers have an average tenure of 18 years of experience! Their support of one another when faced with turnover ensures that nobody is hiring in panic mode. Here are JoAnn’s suggestions for reducing turnover in your store:
“Care in recruitment and hiring along with detailed training helps keep turnover low. Tenured employees are great trainers and help new employees learn the job skills needed. Tenured employees can also attract candidates to your stores. When current
employees are enthusiastic about Sheetz and the benefits we offer, it has a positive effect on candidates. Having employees who have been with us for 10, 15 or 20 plus years sends a positive message that Sheetz is a great employer. Low turnover creates low turnover. When you only have to replace three or four
employees per year, you have three or four months to find the right person for the job. Applicants know exactly when they will be working and how many hours to expect before ever being hired. Managers in my district work hard to create a positive working environment.
When faced with challenges, we work toward a goal that is fair. Not everyone will agree with all outcomes, but if we are fair and consistent and explain how we arrive at outcomes and set standards, we have happier employees. No matter how sensitive the topic, honesty is always the best approach. Discuss your internal survey results! I attend store meetings to go over this with
employees and my management team members are encouraged to discuss the internal survey questions, without regard to the score, to see if everyone understands what the question means. The bottom line is: Ask a lot of questions, work to improve yourself, and develop those who work for you to their full potential!”
