president’s note A Passion for FOOD!
family for dinner, Sheetz can fulfill their needs 24 hours a day like no one else can! We make it convenient for customers
Food. It brings people together. We think about it, talk about it, dream about it, prepare it and look forward to eating it. I love spaghetti carbonara, personally (especially with a nice Cabernet). Now my mouth is watering! Television programs teach us how to
cook and give us tips on where to eat. Chefs on television are actually celebrities because of their food creations and expert advice. Do you have a favorite show on the Food Network? Mine is Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Let’s be honest, food is not only key to our survival as humans, but it’s a passion of ours every day just because it tastes good, and we love it. This mentality means good things

for us at Sheetz because, as you know, we’re serious about food! The folks in our Marketing department and Foodservice teams work tirelessly to keep our menu exciting for customers and entice them with promotions throughout the year. We have to. We have to stay one step ahead of our competition and use our innova- tion to attract hungry customers. With so many restaurant choices out there, it’s not easy. Customers are faced with a big decision when their stomach is growling. Whether they are treating themselves to an apple fritter and a mocha in the morning (my favorites), or they are placing a big order to feed their whole
and offer a wide variety of choices. Touchscreen orderpoints let them breeze through the menu at their own pace and select food that’s Made To Order. Our focus on speed and service is helping them get the food they want even faster. We offer seating at many of our stores. Drive-thrus are being tested at new Sheetz stores, adding an even greater level of convenience. We do all of this work in the name of food! We also recently hired a new chef!
When Keith Boston moved to Mas- sachusetts earlier this year to pursue other foodservice opportunities, we set out to find a shining star in the culinary industry. We believe we found that in Chef Dan Coffin. Dan, whose extensive resume includes executive chef at Apple- bee’s, joined our team this spring as the new culinary development manager. Great things are sure to come with Dan on board as we continue to develop our menu. What is your favorite food on our
menu? I know if it’s lunch time, my favorite choice is a chicken salad sandwich with hot pepper cheese (extra mayo please). Then when the dinner hour rolls around, a meatball sub always hits the spot. Our stores are also a perfect place to grab a between-meal or late-night snack (Mmm, I could go for a frozen Snickers® bar!). Have you ever considered, when you are working at the M•T•O® station in
your store, that you might be preparing someone’s “favorite” food? You might hold in your hands the very thing that will satisfy their taste buds and make their day! If you haven’t thought of it that way, I ask you to start! Think about your own experiences and your habits when it comes to dining out and the anticipation that comes along with waiting for your food! What kind of service do you expect from the restaurant staff? Like most people, you probably expect a friendly face when you walk in and are seated, a waiter or waitress who pays attention to detail—refills your drink without asking, gets your order right, has a pleasant personality—food that tastes good, is prepared correctly and is available at a decent price. I may have to go to an Italian restau-
rant to enjoy my spaghetti carbonara, but I should be able to experience the rest of my favorites and the service to back it up at Sheetz. And I do! I think we do a great job of serving our customers. We understand the passion they have for food, because we feel the same way! Keep this in mind the next time you make what seems like a simple turkey sub. The finished product may mean much more to your customer. Put some passion into it! Hand them their orders and say, “Enjoy your meal!” Let your passion for food go right across the counter. It can be contagious! Is anyone else hungry now?

May’s edition of QSR (Quick-Service Restaurant) magazine highlighted its list of the industry’s 10 most innova- tive people. Among those prominent names listed was our very own President and CEO Stan Sheetz! The article acknowledged our
company’s addition of cutting-edge technology back in 1994 when we introduced the touchscreen orderpoint (Our volume increased by 12 percent immediately after installation, by the way). We were also among the first retailers to offer pay-at-the-pump technology.
“I think innovation should be
driven by the customer and what they need,” Stan said. “Secondly, it should be driven by what we as a company need to efficiently serve the customer. That’s where the genesis of our tech- nology has come from.” Our 140,000-square-foot Sheetz
Bros. Kitchen and our loyalty card program (the MySheetz Card) earned plugs in the article as well. And a few innovative projects on the drawing board for us like an iPhone app and the tests we are conducting on drive-thrus were also mentioned.
Stan’s in good company! The other
nine innovative people listed were: David Novak of Yum! Brands, Inc.; Jeff Harvey of Burgerville; Fred DeLuca of Subway; Sue Morelli of Au Bon Pain; Howard Schultz of Starbucks; Jim Skinner of McDonald’s; Antonio Swad of Pizza Patrón; Cheryl Bachelder of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen; and Steve Ells of Chipotle Mexican Grill. As we continue to focus on the
growth of our food business at Sheetz, this recognition in the industry affirms what many of our customers already know, or are discovering ... Sheetz food rocks!
