Back in the late 1990s RYA Training took its first tentative steps outside the UK with the recognition of a handful of RYA sail cruising centres in Europe and then, much later, in South
Africa. How things have changed! In January 2012 we have more than 2,400 RYA recognised training
centres in 45 countries around the world. From recreational sail training in some of the most beautiful parts of the Mediterranean, to motor cruising schools in North America there is something for everyone, no matter what their level of experience. Many people think of the warm waters of the Caribbean or the stunning islands of the Aegean when they think about cruising overseas. However, in recent years the range of locations with RYA Training on offer has become quite diverse. If you prefer cooler weather what about an RYA Competent Crew course in stunning British Columbia on the west coast of Canada, or perhaps an RYA Day Skipper course in Halifax on the east Coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. If you fancy missing the northern hemisphere winter what about a trip to Cape Town to polish your navigation and pilotage skills around the dramatic southern coast of South Africa? If none of these manage to stir your interest, you may be tempted by the exotic south-east Asian locations of Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. With the growth in popularity of RYA Training internationally has
come a greater acceptance of both recreational and commercial RYA qualifications. Many countries now accept the RYA Yachtmaster® qualification for use on commercial vessels up to 200 tonnes and RYA Day Skipper qualifications and above are accepted almost universally for chartering the world over. For those considering a career in boating, there has never been a better time to get RYA qualified. If you’re planning a holiday to Europe, either on your own boat or
to charter, you would be well advised to obtain an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) before you go. In some countries you cannot charter a vessel without one. In the UK the RYA is the issuing body for ICCs and there are two ways in which you can obtain one: If you hold an RYA course completion certificate (or Certificate of
Competence) of Powerboat Level 2 or above you can apply for an ICC direct to the RYA.
If you do not hold any form of RYA course completion certificate
but have some appropriate experience you can contact one of the many RYA recognised training centres that is authorised to conduct ICC tests. A list of centres is available on the RYA website and many are shown in this brochure. For more details on how to apply for an ICC you can visit the RYA website
