These courses come in four levels. You don’t need to start at the beginning if you already have some experience. Just pick the level that suits you. They can be taken in a variety of ways – at night school, intensively over a week, or in your own time by distance learning.

Essential Navigation and Seamanship A two-day introduction for new, inexperienced or rusty skippers or crew. This course is a great ‘taster’ before the Start Yachting, Competent Crew and Helmsman’s courses.

Day Skipper A comprehensive introduction to cruising for new and inexperienced skippers. This shorebased course is the perfect preparation for the Day Skipper course afloat.

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster® Offshore Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course. It will give you all the theory needed for Coastal Skipper training afloat, and is also great for working towards a Yachtmaster® Coastal or Yachtmaster® Offshore exam.

Yachtmaster® Ocean Unravel the mysteries of astro navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage-making, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids. This course can also be used as a substitute for the written part of the Yachtmaster® Ocean exam (see page 8).

Our courses afloat are complemented by our programme of shorebased courses, offering tuition in navigation and other specialist subjects. Although your training afloat will include some navigation, rules of the road,

meteorology, etc, there is no substitute for studying the subjects in more depth. This is most relevant if you are considering taking a Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper course, when the subject is too complex to be covered in sufficient detail afloat. Your best preparation is to take a navigation course ashore, before putting that knowledge into practice on the water. Full details of the courses below can be found in our brochure ‘RYA Shorebased Training’, available from the RYA on 00 44 (0)23 8060 4148.

These short courses are a great introduction to the many additional skills required by the all-round skipper or crew.

Marine Radio Short Range Certificate A one-day course for anyone who owns a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio.

Diesel Engine A beginners’ course to help you prevent and solve diesel engine failure.

Radar A one-day course giving you an understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance.

Sea Survival A one-day course for anyone going to sea, providing an understanding of how to use the safety equipment on board your boat. A genuine lifesaver.

First Aid A one-day course covering all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. Aimed at anyone going afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or cross-Channel passages.

RYA/IS AF Offshore Safety This course provides training for skippers and crews who may encounter rough weather and problems at sea. Required for some offshore races.
