THE MEANING OF CELEBRATION
COMMENT
Chris Jones, CEO and Director-General of City & Guilds, explains why there is cause for celebration as learners around the world triumph in a challenging economic climate
>
With the UK experiencing high unemployment, increasing infl ation and continued fi nancial uncertainty in 2011, should we really be celebrating anything? The answer is an unequivocal yes. Celebration is about
recognition and as countries around the world rebalance their economies, it is crucial that we recognise the efforts of learners as they build new careers and a new future. A year of outstanding achievements in vocational learning
was celebrated at this year’s prestigious Lion Awards at the Roundhouse in Camden. While the Lion Awards was a glittering ceremony presented by celebrity host George Lamb, the real story was in recognising talent and inspiring individuals to believe they can achieve their dreams. Celebration is also about giving people confi dence.
The Lion Awards Outstanding Achiever of the Year Peter Kernan, whom we profi le on page 12, speaks of his newly found belief in his abilities thanks to winning the award. That same confi dence can now be found in three budding photographers who had their work recognised in
a competition run by City & Guilds. Winning in the level 2 category, Glenys Anthony had spent 40 years working in a solicitors fi rm before deciding to take her photographic skills to the next level. On page 18 she expresses her amazement at how, in just two years, her photography has progressed to the point of winning a national competition.
THE NEXT CHALLENGE
Finally, celebration is about progression. WorldSkills 2011 was held in London and brought together young skilled professionals from 51 countries and regions. Team UK Automobile Technology competitor John Couldridge had worked up from an apprenticeship to become a full-time diagnostic technician, before being selected to represent his country. You can fi nd out on page 21 how he did at WorldSkills and how his career is now progressing. This edition of Broadsheet is full of inspirational stories
about just how much can be achieved through vocational education. After reading them, I hope you’ll agree that it is certainly time to start celebrating.
